Unbroken

In a village called Sultanpur in Afghanistan, there are over one hundred fifty brick kilns. Many families work there. Children wake before sunrise and work all day making bricks with their fathers. A father and his children can make around one thousand bricks per day. They earn very little money.

The school in the village closed. There is no money to keep it open. So the children cannot go to school. Instead, they work in the kilns every day.

The kilns burn bad fuel. This creates thick smoke. The smoke fills the air. It covers the homes. It covers the fields. It makes the children sick. It poisons the environment where they live.

This project is called “Unbroken” because no matter what happens to these children, their spirit cannot be broken. Education has been taken from them. Childhood has been stolen. But they remain. They persist. They survive.
